Abstract

Indonesia is a country with an intense diversity in terms of its local languages and people. This very diverse situation sometimes makes the country face a high potential of conflicts especially if there is no sufficient cultural awareness and understanding among its people. Increasing the cultural literacy level in this multicultural setting, therefore, is crucial to consider. In order to achieve a harmonious life in such a setting, some parties need to participate in the effort to create a peaceful multicultural society, i.e. the family, school, and society. This article presents the efforts that are done by each party to promote cultural literacy to a better level in Indonesian multicultural context. They are socialization of the concepts of multiculturalism, availability of both printed and digital references related to multiculturalism, provision of good examples of the best practices of multiculturalism, and involvement in cultural activities. These provide the basic knowledge to build the awareness and understanding of the cultural diversity that every Indonesian should possess.
