Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the effectiveness of using THIEVES and CSR strategies to improve the reading comprehension of grade 8 students of MTsN 2 Jepara. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the researcher designed a quasi-experimental study. The subject of this study was 110 grade 8 students of MTsN 2 Jepara; 38 students acted as the experimental group 1 to be taught reading comprehension by using the THIEVES strategy, 36 students acted as the experimental group 2 to be taught reading comprehension by using the CSR strategy, and the other 36 students as the control group to be taught reading comprehension by using the conventional strategy. The instrument for collecting the data included a pre-test and post-test, which consisted of 40 multiple-choice items. The resulting data were compared and analyzed to see the effectiveness of using the two strategies. The results of the study show that the score of experimental groups 1 and 2 is higher than that of the control group. Based on the results, it can be concluded that THIEVES and CSR strategies are effective in improving reading comprehension. The data also show that the CSR strategy is better than the THIEVES strategy. Keywords: reading comprehension, CSR Strategy, THIEVES Strategy
