Abstract
PORTRAYING THE INTEGRATION OF CHARACTER EDUCATION IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO GRADE XI STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 4 YOGYAKARTA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2011-2012: A CASE STUDY By Menihati Pramita Hutami 08202244016 ABSTRACT This research aims at describing the integration of character education in teaching English as a foreign language to Grade XI students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011-2012. This was conducted at SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta, as one of the pilot schools in Yogyakarta to integrate character education. This research can be categorized as a case study which employs the qualitative approach. The instruments used were observation sheets and interview guides. The data were collected through observation, interview, and documents. The subjects of the research were the English teacher of grade XI students and grade XI students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta. The trustworthiness was gained by using triangulation. The result of this study shows that the implementation of character education in teaching English as a foreign language to grade XI students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011-2012 is integrated into the planning stage, the teaching and learning stage, and the evaluation stage by developing essential virtues, including friendliness, independence, democracy, responsibility, discipline, curiosity, perseverance, creativity, honesty, cooperation, confidence, respect for others, interest in reading, being religious, and being communicative. In addition, implementing character education in teaching English as a foreign language to grade XI students of SMA Negeri 4 Yogyakarta can give positive impacts to the students’ academic achievement and the students’ behaviour: their English mastery is getting better and their characters develop well by applying the virtues to situations in real life.
