Abstract

The study was aimed at improving the teaching and learning process of listening through Total Physical Response (TPR) to the fourth grade students of SD Negeri Sidoarum. The study was action research. The research procedure consisted of reconnaissance, planning, actions, observation, and reflection. The research was done in two cycles with three meetings in Cycle 1 and two meetings in Cycle 2. The subjects of the research were the English teacher, the collaborator, the researcher, and the fourth grade students, the number of whom was 38 students. The data collection techniques were observation, interviews, and tests. Hence, the data were in the form of field notes, interview transcripts, and students’ scores of the pre-test and the post-test. In analyzing the data, two methods were used. The qualitative data were analyzed in five steps, i.e. assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data in the form of the pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed by comparing the mean scores. The result of the research shows that the use of TPR improved the teaching and learning of listening. The lessons were clearly delivered through the real experiences of learning. The instructional variety which covered various activities and media maintained the students’ interest and motivation. Besides, the students’ engagement in the learning process was better since there were many students involved in the activities. Most of them also successfully participated in giving and responding to the commands. Based on the quantitative data, the students’ listening scores increased. The students’ mean scores increased from 62.11 to 91.2. From the data above, it can be concluded that TPR improved the teaching and learning process of listening.
