Abstract

This research is aimed at improving the quality of the speaking teaching and learning process at the 8 A class, of SMP N 6 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012. Based on the preliminary observation, the main problem was the use of media in the teaching and learning process was not effective. This condition made the speaking activities did not vary and less interactive. This problem showed that the quality of speaking teaching and learning process was not effective. Therefore, the effort made to solve those related problems was by implementing media, namely multimedia teaching aids, in the speaking classes. This research was an action research study. There were two types of data collected in this study, namely qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were used to describe the progress of the actions. These data were obtained from the daily observation, interviews, and discussions with the English teacher, students of VIII A, and a collaborator. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were in the forms of number and percentage to support the qualitative one. The quantitative data were obtained by doing pre-test and post-test. These data also were analyzed by using the t-test Statistics. The result of the research shows that implementation of multimedia teaching aids could improve both the quality of the speaking teaching and learning process and the quality of the students’ speaking ability. The students became more active and all students were involved in teaching learning process. All of the students were able to communicate and cooperate each other in doing the tasks. It created a better circumstance. Students were more enthusiastic in joining the lesson, so the class became alive. Furthermore, there was also improvement in students’ achievement. It can be seen from the result of Paired-Sample t-test. The students’ pre-test score was 65.40 and their average mark increased to 75.21 in the post-test. Based on the result of the statistical analysis, the t value is 17.52, which rejects the null hypothesis since it is greater than the critical values of t; that is 2.042. This indicates that the improvement of students’ speaking ability was significantly gained.
