Abstract

The objective of the research is to improve the speaking ability of the fifth grade students of SD N Jogomangsan II Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012 by implementing role plays. This is action research. The participants of the research were the 5th grade students of SD N Jogomangsan II Yogyakarta while the research members were the English teacher, the collaborator and the school principal. The research steps consisted of reconnaissance, planning, action, observation, and reflection. To deal with the problems, the researcher implemented some role plays which were divided into individual role plays and interactive role plays. The role plays were started from defining objectives, choosing context and roles, introducing the excercise until the role play itself. After all of that steps, the researcher concluded discussion and made assesment. The researcher also used simple classroom English during the teaching and learning process to make the students familiar with English in the speaking learning process. The data were collected through observation in the English teaching and learning process and interview with the research members. The instruments for collecting the data are observation guidelines and interview guidelines. The data, in the form of field notes and interview transcripts were analyzed qualitatively. The findings of this research show that the role plays were effective to improve the students’ speaking ability by implementing individual and interactive role plays to improve students’ pronunciation.
