Abstract

This study aims to analyse the cohesive devices in students’ writing in Indonesian EFL classrooms, with the objectives: 1) To find out what common cohesive devices types are frequently used in high school students’ academic writing, 2) To explore the cohesive specifications found in the high school student's academic writing. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive and analytical design qualitative method. The writing test instrument is used to gain the data. Students were asked to write argumentative essays in the form of analytical exposition texts. The researcher used the descriptive study to describe the most frequently used cohesive devices found in students’ writings and their specifications. Using analytical study, the researcher analyses and explains the correctness and incorrectness of cohesive devices use found in students’ writings. This qualitative study still needed quantitative data to support the method. The result of the study reveals that: 1) The result reveals the most frequently used cohesive devices in students’ writing is the reference with a percentage of 43,52 and the number of devices 299 words, 2) Based on the analysis of the specifications of cohesive devices found in students’ writings, personal reference was used the most by students with the percentage of 28.67%. Most students use personal references to refer to the audience and themselves since they wrote analytical exposition texts to persuade the readers. 3). The assessment of students’ essays shows that the quality of writing has no connection with the number of cohesive devices used. The assessment of how students used cohesive devices shows that overall, students use the correct cohesive devices. Some students made just a few errors in using cohesive devices. Keywords: cohesion, cohesive devices, argumentative essay
