Abstract

This research aims to reveal the characteristics of the English test items in the Year-End Assessment (YEA) of grade 8 students of SMPN 8 in Yogyakarta through theoretical analysis (content validity) and empirical analysis (classical test theory and item response theory) to get the data on the quality of the test items. This study is descriptive quantitative, conducted at State Junior High School 8 Yogyakarta in May-July 2018. The data sources were chosen stratified randomly on the test items. There are two sets of test items. The test items were examined based on CTT with the Iteman 4.0 and IRT with the Quest program. Set 1 was administered to 150 students, and Set 2 was administered to 150 students. The students were grouped into high, medium, and low categories. The results of this study show that: (1) the number of the accepted test items in terms of content validity for Set 1 is 34 items or 85% and the remaining 15% need revision; (2) the number of the accepted test items in terms of content validity of Set 2 is 33 items or 82.5% and the remaining 17.5% need revision; (3) the number of the accepted test items in the Iteman for Set 1 is 21 items or 52.5%, the revised items are 15 items or 37.5%, and the remaining 10% are rejected; (4) the number of the accepted test items in the Iteman for Set 2 is 24 items or 60%, the revised items are 15 items or 37.5%, and the rejected item is one item or 2.5%; (5) the number of the accepted items in the Quest for Set 1 is 12 items or 30% and the remaining 28 items or 70% need revision; (6) the number of the accepted items for Set 2 is 19 items or 47.5% and the remaining 21 items or 52.5% need revision. Therefore, it can be inferred that the test item analysed for its content validity has good characteristic, the test item analysed using the Iteman has moderate characteristic, and the test item analysed using the Quest program has poor characteristic. Keywords: characteristics of test items, content validity, iteman, quest
