Abstract

This study presents the implementation of the intercultural language learning approach in teaching Indonesian language to international students in the BIPA program at Yogyakarta State University (YSU). The study seeks to respond to the following main question: How is the intercultural language learning implemented in the BIPA program? Ethnography was a research design used in this study. The participants of this study were the teachers and international students of BIPA program at YSU. Hence, 17 students from different countries in Asia, North America, Africa and Europe were involved in the study. These students were in three classes: basic class, intermediate class and advanced class. Also, the study involved nine teachers of the three classes. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and document review. Moreover, triangulation by sources and techniques were applied to ensure the credibility of the findings. The data were analyzed qualitatively by interactive model consisting of three stages: data condensation, data display and drawing verification, and conclusion. The findings indicate that intercultural language learning is implemented with various strategies, resources, tasks, and uses of technology. The implementation supported the principles and processes of intercultural language learning. The extent of implementation varied from class to class too. Furthermore, all students were moving stage by stage from ethnocentrism to ethnorelativism with regard to Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity and 76% being in the adaption stage. Thus, it is recommended that interaction with the target cultural community in different cultural activities be more intensified to make students more competent at intercultural communication. Moreover, the students should be given more time to do comparative analysis of the target culture and their own cultures through the use of technology and classroom dialogues. Finally, the researcher suggests that more studies be conducted on the implementation of the intercultural approach in the BIPA program, including the participants from more than one university. Keywords: communicative, competence, ethnocentrism, ethno- relativism, intercultural- approach.
