Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing: (1) character values found in English textbooks for senior high school, (2) the ways of integrating character values in English textbooks for senior high school, (3) the integration of character values in four language skills in English textbooks for senior high schools, and (4) the strategies of integrating character values in English textbooks for senior high schools. This study was an inductive qualitative content analysis. The sources of the data were four English textbooks entitled Bahasa Inggris Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade X Kelompok Wajib published by Erlangga, Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK Kelas X published by Yrama Widya, and Contextual English 1 by Tiga Serangkai. The data were collected through reading and taking notes of the data description. The data analysis procedure consisted of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data trustworthiness of the study was gained from credibility and confirmability. The findings of the study show that: (1) in total, there were 29 character values found in four English textbooks analyzed in this study, however, it was found that each textbook has not fully integrated character values as proposed by the government but they are enriched with the other values that emerge in the textbooks and are captured in the study, (2) there are six ways used to integrate character values in English textbooks, such as, through learning materials, changing negative into positive aspect, discussion and brainstorming, story, song, drama/role-play, and other learning activities which include monologue/dialogue/conversation, game, letter, project, portfolio, and presentation, (3) character values are integrated in four language skills of English, like reading, speaking, writing, and listening, (4) there are two strategies used to integrate character values in English textbooks, explicit and implicit.
