Abstract

The aim of the research is to develop task-based speaking materials based on the target and learning needs of the students of flight attendant school Jogja Flight and to reveal the appropriateness of the developed materials. This is a research and development (R&D) study which adapted the model proposed by Jolly and Bolitho in Tomlinson (2011) consisting of conducting preliminary observation, conducting needs analysis, designing course grid, designing framework of materials, developing the first draft of the materials, getting the materials judged by the expert, product-testing (small group try-out), conducting final implementation (large group try-out), evaluating the materials, and finishing the final draft of the materials. The subjects of this research were divided into two sections, namely the needs analysis and the evaluation of the product. The needs analysis involved 103 students, 3 instructors, 2 stakeholders, 5 experienced flight attendants, whereas the product evaluation involved 2 materials experts, 6 students (small group try-out), and 24 students (large group try-out). This research acquired the data by distributing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and observing the learning process. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed using the descriptive statistics and the data collected through the interviews were analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative technique. The result of this research is the task-based speaking materials entitled Up in the Air: Speaking Materials for Prospective Flight Attendant. The product contains six units, they are (1) Welcome Aboard, Madam, (2) May I have Your Attention? (3) Would You Like to Drink? (4) Sure, I’ll Get It for You, (5) Fasten Your Seatbelt, Please, and (6) What Happen, Sir? Each unit consists of three main parts: the introduction, main lesson, and reinforcement. According to the result of the expert judgment, the developed material is appropriate and feasible to be used as learning materials. This is shown by the mean score of the following aspects: the content (3.89 of 4), the presentation (3.78 of 4), the language (3.89 of 4) and the graphics (3.90 of 4). In addition, based on the feedback from the instructor and students, the mean scores of the developed materials are 3.70 of 4 (from the instructor) and 3.84 of 4 (from the students), both of which put the developed materials into the “very good” criterion. Keywords: flight attendant, materials development, speaking, task-based
