Abstract

The research is aimed at revealing: 1) the effectiveness of Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model on the ability to write recount texts of the eighth grade students and 2) the effectiveness of the SRSD model on the writing motivation of the eighth grade students. This research was quasi-experimental research with the pre-test posttest control group design. The population was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pejagoan Kebumen in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample was students of class VIII E and VIII F established using cluster random sampling. The class VIII E was assigned into the experimental group and the class VIII F was determined as the control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. The data of students‟ writing were taken from the result of writing test while the data of students‟ writing motivation were taken through writing motivation questionnaire adapted from Survey of Motivation to Engage with Writing Questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics of multivariate analysis through MANCOVA was used to test the hypothesis. The results are as follows: 1) there is a significant difference in the students‟ writing recount texts due to the SRSD model at the significance level of 0.017 and 2) there is no significant difference in the students‟ writing motivation after SRSD implementation at the significance level of 0.104. These findings show that: 1) the SRSD model is more effective in increasing students‟ ability to write recount texts compared with the conventional teaching model, and 2) the SRSD model is not more effective than the conventional teaching model in fostering students‟ writing motivation. Keywords: SRSD, writing motivation, writing skills
