Abstract

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGLISH TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS AT THE FIRST GRADE OF UNIVERSAL HOMESCHOOLING IN TEMANGGUNG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2010/2011 By Amelia SeptinAgustiniek 05202244072 ABSTRACTS This researchis aimed to describe the characteristics of the English teaching-learning process of the first grade at Universal Homeschooling Temanggung in the academic year of 2010/2011. In conducting the study, the researcher involved the English teacher, the school principal, and the students of grade 1. The subjects of the study were 22 students and the English teacher of grade 1 of Universal Homeschooling Temanggung in the academic year of 2010/2011. Data were collected through observations in a class and in-depth interviews with the English teacher, headmaster, and ten students. The main instrumentswerea digital camera, an audio recorder, an observation guide, and also an interview guide. The data collected were the students’ behavior or in the form of their activities. Besides, the researcher observed the English teaching-learning process in the classroom, so both the students and teachers were observed. The findings showed that this homeschooling is a type of community homeschooling. There are enrichments such as qiroati, taekwondo, painting, and broadcasting in this homeschooling.Because there is no curriculum from MONE for the first to the third grades so that for the first grade, English is taught through Fokus –a kind of students’ work sheet arranged by Fokus composer team.The teacher focuses on teachingvocabulary. In the opening activities, sometimes the teacher checks the students’ homework one by one. Besides, sometimes heasks some questions to the students to help them remember the vocabulary items. The teacher always presents the materials by writing or drawing some pictures on the whiteboard. He also checks the students’ mastery by asking them some questions about the materials that have been discussed, such as the names of fruits and things around the students. The teacher in doing exercises activity, asks the students to do exercises on the Fokus. Sometimes the teacher also gives the students exercises from whiteboard. In memorising and mentioning some vocabulary items, the students memorize the vocabulary items and mention them one by one in front of the teacher after they finished their work.The game used by the teacher is called sombyo.Most of students are active and confident, they ask questions to their teacher when they do not understand about the materials that have been given. Universal homeschooling is making an effort to improve the quality of the school itself and also the English teaching-learning process
