Abstract
This research investigates meaning realizations of the three multilingual translational texts. The focus of study is upon the interpersonal meaning breadth variations. This study is aimed at describing the interpersonal meaning breadth variations among the three texts, quantitatively and qualitatively. This description is intended to gain further analysis about its effects on the whole meaning of each clause. These two aspects lead the study into the second objective of this research, which describes on how the interpersonal meaning breadth variations affect to the situational and cultural values of the text involved that represent the children’s literature genre in question. The study was a content analysis study employing both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis was used to measure the mean frequency of interpersonal meaning breadth variations both in T1 in comparison with T2 (French: English) and T1 in comparison with T3 (French: Bahasa Indonesia). The qualitative analysis was used to gain further discussion on the description of each variation including its impact on the children’s literature translation in general. The subjects of this research were three multilingual novellas, “Le Petit Prince”,” The Little Prince”, and “Pangeran Kecil”. The unit of analysis in this study was all clauses represented in the texts. There were 310 units of analysis for each comparison, to talling 620 units of analysis as a whole. One unit of analysis compared two languages, showing that the number of clauses was unlimited. The analysis was performed in the form of mood blocks consisting of the categorization of interpersonal meaning constituents. The results of the study show that the interpersonal meaning breadth variations of text one compared to text two are in the range of very low variation (5.29%), in which T2 has more breadth than T1 (1 : 3). This result is similar to the comparison of interpersonal meaning breadth variations in text one and text three, the very low variation (8.32%), in which T1 has more breadth than T3 (9: 1). The forms of variations are presented through some additions and omissions which tends to create clarifications and characters’ strengthening. The omissions are performed with respect to significant expressions and grammatical retaining. Another prominent cause of the variations is the lack of finite verbal operators in Bahasa Indonesia. The occurrences of additions are presented more by the translator of English rather than the one of Bahasa Indonesia. This is proven by the absence of variation four and five in text three. Regarding the effects of the variations on the situational and cultural values of the text-involved, it is found that the very low variation in the subject of this research performs a comprehensive and communicative translation for children as the target readers.
