Abstract

In applying Curriculum 2013, the technology-integrated English learning material is needed. Therefore this research aims to develop an appropriate comic-based English learning multimedia of reading for second year students of junior high school. This research was a research and development study following the model developed by Alessi & Trollip. The subjects of the small group try out were six second year students of SMP 15 and SMP 9 Yogyakarta. The subjects of the large try out consisted of 66 second year students of SMP 15 and SMP 9 Yogyakarta. The data collecting techniques were interview, observation, questionnaire, and pretest and posttest. The data were collected by using an interview guideline;questionnaires for material and media expert, teachers and students; observation sheet; and test for pretest and posttest.The data analysis technique used was Likert scale and qualitative data conversion suggested by Sukardjo. The result of the research shows: (1) the developed comic-based English learning multimedia of reading for second year students of junior high school is a learning multimedia software consisting of four main menus: introduction, learning, evaluation, and profiles;(2) the validation result from material and media experts shows that the developed comic-based English learning multimedia of reading obtains a score of 3.85 (good) on content, 3.71 (good) on presentation, 3.86 (good) on language, and 4.05 (good) on media appropriateness and categorized as appropriate. The results of large group tryout by the students show that this multimedia product obtains a score of 4.11 (very good) on content, 4.09 (very good) on presentation, 4.09 (very good) on language, and 3.94 (good) on media appropriateness and categorized as appropriate. Besides, the English teacher of SMP 15 Yogyakarta gives this product a score of 3.69 (good) on content, 4.00 (good) on presentation, 4.00 (good) on language and 4.05 (good) on media appropriateness whereas the English teacher of SMP 9 Yogyakarta gives this product a score of 3.30 (fair) on content, 3.43 (good) on presentation, 3.63 (good) on language and 4.05 (good) on media appropriateness and categorized as appropriate. The pretest and posttest results show an improvement in the students’ achievement with a score of 65.15 on the pretest and 80.08 on the posttest. These results show that the developed comic-based English learning multimedia of reading is an appropriate English learning material of reading.
