Abstract

In this modern era, young generation has gradually lost interest to learn local language and literature, including those of Sundanese. This has caused character educational values to fade, and one of them is the appreciation for their own culture. One of some applicable ways to prevent this from futher lose was the use of learning materials in the form of carpon and Sundanese pupuh for elementary school students. This study aimed to describe (1) character educational values found in carpon Di PipirTajug and Sundanese pupuh, (2) elements of story included in carpon Di Pipir Tajug and elments of Sundanese pupuh which were used to point out character educational values, (3) describe which carpon Di Pipir Tajug and which Sundanese pupuh were appropriate to be learning materials for elementary school students. This study was a descriptive qualitative study which deeply portrayed the character educational values in both research subjects, the book collection of carpon Di Pipir Tajug written by Min Resmana and the book collection of Sundanese pupuh by Mang Koko and Natapradja. Data collection technique used was reading and taking notes of every lyric, stanza, and paragraph in both carpon and Sundanese pupuh containing character educational values. The steps of data analysis were:1) data comparison; (2) data categorization; (3) data presentation; and (4) inferencing. Results of the study showed that (1) the character educational values most frequently emergi in seven carpon were the values of integrity which included honesty, excellence, politeness, and righteousness. On the other hand, character educational values most frequently shown in 17 kinds of Sundanese pupuh were the values of teamwork (gotong royong)including cooperation, solidarity, helpfulnes, and affinity;(2)elements of story incarpon Di Pipir Tajug containing most character educational values were characters, plot, and theme, as well as elements of pupuh such as padalisan, guru wilangan, guru lagu, and watek that formed lyrics containing the value of character education;(3) both carponand Sundanese pupuh studied had remarkable life values, so six carponin the book collection ofcarpon Di Pipir Tajugand 17 kinds of Sundanese pupuh were considered appropriate as learning materials for elementary school students.
