Abstract

In learning a second or foreign language, a learner will reach a phase where they use a language system that is not from their native language (NL) or the target language (TL). This system is called interlanguage (IL). The aims of this research are to: (1) find out and describe the phonological, lexical, and syntactic forms of English language learners’ interlanguage in Pondok Pesantren Al-Furqon Tasikmalaya, and (2) find out whether there are any differences in the interlanguage of the learners of different grades. This research was a descriptive study. The subjects of this research were 24 learners of the first, second, and third grades of the MTs Pondok Pesantren Al-Furqon Tasikmalaya. The data were collected using two primary techniques. Firstly, twelve research subjects were asked to have conversation in pairs. Each pair was from the same grade. Secondly, the data were collected by using a direct interview technique. Six students were interviewed in this session. In addition, six learners were asked to pronounce a list of words containing all key sounds in the English language. The data collected were recorded and transcribed. Then, the data were filtered by using Corder’s procedure (1981. Then, the next step was to analyze the data by the phonological, lexical, and syntactic forms. The results of the research reveal the existence of the following aspects in the learners’ interlanguage: (1) phonological transfers of /æ//e/, /θ//t/, /ð//d/, /ð//t/, /ɔ//o/, /ɒ//o/, /v//p/, /f//p/, and /p//f/; (2) lexical transfers of NL words’ meanings, NL reduplication, NL hesitation device, code-switching, code-mixing, and borrowing; (3) transfers of NL sentence structures; (4) phonological overgeneralizations of /ʌ/, /eː/, and /dʒ/; (5) lexical overgeneralizations of pronoun + to be, determiner ‘much’, pronouns ‘other’ and ‘another’, pronouns ‘nothing’ and ‘something’, adverb ‘sometime’, numbers, word meaning, the use of nouns as verbs, the use of verb as noun, adjective forms, conjunction ‘when’, and singular forms of nouns; and (6) syntactic overgeneralizations of present tense, prepositions, present perfect question sentence, infinitive, present participle (-ing), passive voice, deletion of ‘to be’, deletion of determiner ‘a’, and deletion of prepositions. The findings in this research also show that phonological transfers are found in all grades while phonological overgeneralizations are found in the first and second grades only. Lexical transfers are mostly found in the expressions of the first grade learners while lexical overgeneralizations are found in all grades. Syntactic transfers and syntactic overgeneralizations are found in all grades.
