Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the interpersonal meaning breadth variation realized by the mood types of the source text of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein and its Bahasa Indonesia translation Frankenstein, translated by Anton Adiwiyoto. This study concerns with interlingual analysis since it involves two languages English text as the source language text and Bahasa Indonesia text as the target language text and explaining the contextual motivating factors of the occurring mood types that demonstrate the interpersonal meaning breadth variation in question. This research employed the descriptive qualitative method to describe the data and supported quantitative analysis in which the researcher used numbers and precentages measuring the occurences of the Mood types. The data are all clauses in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as the T1 (English text) and Anton Adiwiyoto’s Frankenstein text as T2 (Indonesian text) then they are analyzed based on Mood types of each text. The research main instrument is the researcher himself. The data results were recapped on tables and data sheets. After that they were described into words and then the motivating factors of the occurring Mood types were explained. The result of this research shows that the translation between the source text and the target text are in the lowest degree of variation in terms of interpersonal meaning breadth variation. This indicates that the source text and the target text are not significantly different. 1. This research unveils that the degrees of the interpersonal meaning breadth variation of both texts is in the lowest degree ST=TT, there are 1698 clauses. It means that Text 1 has the same degree of Text. 2. This research also shows that the most occurrence of the mood type in both texts is declarative clause there are 2457 clauses in text 1 and 3688 clauses in text 2. 3. The field of the novel is about an horror, the tenor is the author and the readers of source text and target text, and the mode of source text and target text are written texts. The two texts are considered as good works in terms of interpersonal meaning breadth variation for the target readers since T1 readers are the English and T2 readers are the Indonesian.
