Abstract

This research was about cohesion in the headlines of Jakarta Post online issued in November- December, 2010. The objectives of this study were: 1) to describe the types of cohesion devices used in the headlines of the Jakarta Post Online, and 2) to interpret the occurring types of cohesion devices in the headlines of the Jakarta Post online. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The data source of this research was headlines of the Jakarta Pos online issued in November- December, 2010. The data were in the form of sentences. The instruments of this research were the researcher. The data analysis of this research was chosen the texts randomly as sample then read the data carefully, determining the frequency and percentage of occurrences of grammatical and lexical cohesion types in the headlines of the Jakarta Pos online. After founding the most prominent of cohesion type occurring in the text, the result would be completed by the comment on the patter of the cohesion types used. This research applied four criteria of validity and reliability for trustworthiness of the data, i.e. credibility, dependability, and conformability. The findings of the research show that there were 1.630 data of ties i.e. reference (806 or 49.4%), substitution (29 or 1.8 %), ellipsis (9 or 0.6 %), conjunction (422 or 25.9 %), and lexical (364 or 22.3 %). From the data above, referent (personal, demonstrative, and comparative) was the most prominence. From those kinds of referent, personal referent was the most prominence. The use of personal referent was to minimize the repetition of the name of person or an object in the headlines. Demonstrative referent was need to shorten the noun phrases, and comparative referent were not occur in the headlines. At last, the use of referent was minimized the repetition of people’s names, objects, and events occurring in the same headlines. The study concluded that the use of referent was achieved the efficiency of the available space without reducing the essence of the information presented until the sentence was not too long and understandable. Therefore, the result of this research was relevant with the nature of headlines; brief, eye catching, impacted, and effective. Key Words: Headlines, the Jakarta Post Online, Cohesion.
