Abstract

This research was intended to develop critical thinking-based speaking materials for adult learners in CES Speaking Club, an English speaking club for university students in Kendari City and Bau-bau City, South-East Sulawesi. This research was research and development. The development of the speaking materials was based on the combination of ADDIE concept proposed by Branch (2009) and materials development model proposed by Nation and Macalister (2010). The development of the speaking materials passed through nine stages: conducting environment analysis, doing needs analysis, deciding the learning principles, setting the learning goals, designing the syllabus, writing the materials, revising the materials, try-outing the materials, and evaluating the materials. The try-out was conducted twice. The first tryout (small group try-out) involved 6-12 participants from CES Speaking Club Kendari while the second try-out (large group try-out) involved 16-20 participants from CES Speaking Club Bau-bau. The data were obtained from observation, questionnaire, and interview. The observation and interview were for collecting qualitative data while the the results of questionnaire were for quantitative data analyzed by using percentages and descriptive statistics. The research finding showed that: (1) critical thinking-based speaking materials were developed under the consideration of environment analysis, needs analysis, and the current theories in language teaching and learning; (2) based on the expert validation, the quality of the developed speaking materials for content, activity, language, and graphic aspect was in the interval 3.50 ≤ x ≤ 3.71, which indicated that the developed speaking materials were very appropriate to be tried out; (3) the result of learners’ evaluation in the large group try-out showed that the mean scores for content, activity, language, and graphic aspect were within the data interval 3.50 ≤ x ≤ 3.68, which indicated that the developed speaking materials were very appropriate to be used for English speaking activity in CES Speaking Club.
