Abstract

This study aims to find out the parental involvement of students with special needs in inclusive schools, consist of: (1) parenting, (2) communication, (3) volunteering, (4) learning at home, (5) decision making, (6) communit y collaboration, (7) supporting factors, and (8) inhibiting factors. This was qualitative research with the type of case study. The subjects in this study were parents, special assistant teachers (GPK), classroom teachers, students, and older siblings of students. The data were collected through interviews and documentation with the researcher as the main instrument. The data analysis was done in two stages, namely within-case analysis using the interactive data analysis method of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (data condensation, data display, conclusions drawing/verification) and cross-case analysis using Code-Document Table. The data validity was tested by using triangulation, member check, bold descriptions and prolong time in the field. The results of this study are explained as follows. (1) Parenting is carried out through practicing discipline, independence and providing an environment that supports children's learning because parents understand the importance of independence and understand the child's condition. (2) Communication is carried out through communicating related to learning and school activities because parents need to consult with teachers and conveying the development of children's learning. (3) Volunteering is done through participating in school activities because of the direction from the school. (4) Learning at home is carried out through monitoring, assisting learning, assisting doing assignments, and accompanying exams. (5) Decision-making is carried out through being involved in making decisions related to learning for children and decisions related to schools in general, where the school tries to involve parents. (6) Community collaboration is carried out through collaborating with study groups, sports institutions, Disability Service Units, doctor and psychologist. Parents collaborate because they know the conditions and needs of children and had financial capabilities (7) Supporting factors are understanding the child's condition, openness of parents, ability to provide facilities, family structure, ULD assistance, good communication and collaboration with GPK. (8) Inhibiting factors are difficulty understanding the subject matter, difficulty in managing time, lack of trust, and do not have communication tools, the school system is not ready, the attitude of the GPK is not open, attitude of class teachers who discriminate against students with special needs and the school do not appreciate the existence of GPK.
