Abstract

This study aims to: (1) develop a local wisdom-based story calendar suitable for improving narrative essay writing skills and patriotism character of grade IV students of elementary school, and (2) reveal the effectiveness of the developed story calendar. This research is research and development applying Brog & Gall model consisting of 10 steps: 1) preliminary study, 2) planning, 3) development of product draft, 4) initial trial, 5) evaluation of initial trial results, 6) field trials, 7) product revisions, 8) operational trials, 9) improvement of the final product, and 10) dissemination and implementation. The subjects are grade IV students of elementary schools in Semarang City. The data collection was through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Product validation is carried out by material experts and media experts, as well as teacher and student responses. The data analysis used the independent sample t-test with prerequisite tests of normality and homogeneity tests, followed by the MANOVA test with the prerequisite multivariate normality test and covariance homogeneity test at the significance level of 0.05. The result is a local wisdom-based story calendar containing materials for writing narrative essays and the value of patriotism. It is feasible to use based on the results of the validation by material experts and media experts with the "very feasible" category. The independent sample t-test on the narrative essay writing skills produces a significance value of 0.000 (control class - experimental class I) and 0.000 (control class- experimental class II), which means that there are differences in the average narrative essay writing skills of students who used the developed story calendar. The independent sample t-test on the character of patriotism produces significance values of 0.025 (control class experimental class I) and 0.044 (control class experimental class II), which means that there are differences in the average patriotism character of students who used the developed story calendar. The MANOVA test results show a significance value of 0.000 <0.05 which could be interpreted that the developed story calendar significantly affects the narrative writing skills and patriotism character of grade IV students of elementary school in Semarang City
