Abstract

This study aims to: (1) develop a feasible worksheet based on Visual Thinking Strategies for fifth graders; (2) produce an initial draft of Visual- Thinking-based worksheet for fifth graders; and (3) examine the effectiveness of the worksheet to improve process skills and critical thinking ability of fifth graders. This study used Borg & Gall model of Research and Development (R&D) which includes 10 steps of product development. The feasibility of the product was assessed by a subject content expert and media expert. Subjects for the trials were fifth graders in State Elementary Schools (SDN) 24 Mataram, SDN 7 Ampenan, and SDN 16 Mataram, in Nusa Tenggara Barat. Data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire and written test. The instruments included a teacher interview guideline, student preliminary questionnaire, validation questionnaire for content and media experts, teachers’ and students’ response questionnaire, and student guidelines for observation of process skills and tests of critical thinking skills. The Visual-Thinking-based worksheet was assessed in terms of didactic, construction and technicality using a 4-level Likert scale. The performance achievements or effectiveness of the Visual-Thinking- based worksheet to promote process skills and critical thinking ability of student was examined using time series and regression test (significance level of 0.05). The results show that: (1) the Visual-Thinking-based worksheet is feasible to improve process skills and critical thinking ability of fifth graders in integrative thematic learning; (2) the initial draft of the Visual-Thinking-based worksheet fulfills didactic, construction and technical requirements; and (3) the Visual- Thinking-based worksheet is an effective media to improve process skills and critical thinking ability of fifth graders in integrative thematic learning. The result of time series test shows that worksheet can improve students’ process skills and critical thinking ability, while the results of the regression test conclude that the worksheet has a positive effect on the process skills and critical thinking ability of fifth graders significantly with the value of F<0.05.
