Abstract

This study aims to: (1) reveal an overview of the learning trajectory of elementary school students in solving simple statistical problems; (2) reveal an overview of problem solving abilities and mathematical connections of upper elementary school students in solving simple statistical problems. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were high class students consisting of 2 grades IV and 2 classes V in two Pekanbaru State Primary Schools. Data collection is done by testing, observation and interview techniques. Data analysis was carried out, namely the analysis of written tests of mathematical questions based on indicators of assessment of problem solving abilities and mathematical connections, and analysis of interview results to clarify and confirm students' learning trajectories conducted descriptively. The results showed that (1) the learning trajectory of upper elementary school students had differences that were seen in the more or less numerous stages. Factors that influence students' learning trajectory are the learning methods applied by the teacher. Students who learn with diverse learning methods have more patterns of student learning trajectory than students who learn with a teacher-centered learning process; (2) The ability to solve problems and mathematical connections of elementary school students in the upper level are overall moderate category in simple statistical material. Factors that influence students 'problem solving abilities and mathematical connections are the level of students' mathematical abilities. Students who have high mathematical abilities are able to solve problems in accordance with aspects of problem solving abilities and more complete and precise mathematical connections. Students who have low mathematical abilities are not able to understand problems and identify problems. And not able to solve the problem is not routine and look back
