Abstract

This study aims to: (1) develop a teaching kit of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model integrated with the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) approach for improving the problem solving skill and science literacy of grade V students of elementary school, and (2) reveal the effectiveness of the developed teaching kit in improving the problem solving skill and science literacy of grade V students of elementary school. This study is research and development applying the 4D research model (define, design, develop and disseminate). The developed teaching kit was validated by lecturers and elementary school teachers and was tried out limitedly to 26 grade V students. The subjects of the field trial comprised 41 students (21 students in the experiment class, and 20 students in the control class). The instruments used are the problem solving skill test and student science literacy questionnaire. The data were analyzed through the tests of normality, homogeneity, Mann Whitney analysis, and normalized gain score (n-gain score). The findings of this research are as follows. (1) The developed teaching kit is feasible to use based on the assessment from reviewers. (2) The developed teaching kit is effective in improving students’ problem solving skill, as evidenced by the n-gain score of 0.49, which is in the moderate category and at the significance value of 0.024 < 0.05. (3) The developed teaching kit is significantly effective in improving the students’ science literacy, as proved by the n-gain score of 0.64, which is in the moderate category and the significance value of 0.002 < 0.05.
