Abstract

This study aims to: (1) produce the eligible module based on realistic mathematics education, and (2) know the effectiveness of module in improving the mathematical problem solving and communication skills of grade V students of elementary school. This study refers to the 10 steps of research and development by Borg & Gall. The testing subjects consist of 10 students in the preliminary field testing, 60 students in the main field testing, and 92 students in the operational field testing, which is devided into two groups, namely experimental group and the control group. The data were collected through interviews, observation, questionnaires, scales, and tests, and analyzed using the independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test at the significance level 0.05. The results of the study are as follows. (1) The developed module based on realistic mathematics education is qualified to be applied in learning process. This module has fulfilled the feasibility criteria according to the validation by experts and also based on teacher and student responses. (2) The developed module is effective in improving the mathematical problem solving and communication skills. The mathematical problem solving skills increased significantly based on paired sample t-test at the significance level of 0.05 (sig. 2- tailed) = 0.000 < α = 0.05, and the mathematical communication skills increased significantly based on paired sample t-test at the significance level of 0.05 (sig. 2-tailed) = 0.000 < α = 0.05.
