Abstract

This study aims to reinvestigate: (1) the students’ writing anxiety, (2) the students’ writing self-efficacy, and (3) the differences in students’ writing anxiety, self-efficacy and performance differed by gender and school category. The study is categorized as survey research. The respondents of the study were 358 students in six public and private junior high schools in Sleman, Yogyakarta in the academic year 2019/2020. The schools were categorized into high, medium and low levels. Every level was represented by two schools consisting students grade VIII. The data were collected through a questionnaire and a test which were distributed to selected respondents using Stratified Random Sampling. The questionnaire used in this study was writing anxiety questionnaires adapted from Cheng (2004) and the adapted version of writing self-efficacy from Bandura (1997). The test was in the form of writing composition to measure the students’ writing achievement. The data were analysed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The findings emerged from this study include: (1) the students’ writing anxiety was represented in three dimensions, i.e. cognitive, somatic and avoidance behaviour; (2) the students’ writing self-efficacy is also represented in three dimensions, i.e. magnitude, generality and strength; and (3) there are significant differences between the students’ writing anxiety, self-efficacy and performance based on the gender and school category. It can be stated that all dimensions of writing anxiety and self-efficacy appeared from public and private junior high school students in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta.
