Abstract

The aims of the study are (1) to reveal the needs of dentistry students in learning public speaking, (2) to develop public speaking learning materials the students, and (3) to examine the materials’ potential in improving students’ learning outcome. This study is a design-based research employing the ADDIE model proposed by Branch (2009). The researcher acted as the materials developer as well as the teacher since the data collection was conducted in the dentistry class he taught. The subjects were 21 dentistry students for the needs analysis and 17 dentistry students for the try-out. They were the students of a private university in Yogyakarta. The sampling technique used was the purposive sampling technique considering the availability of the public speaking class taught in the academic year of 2019/2020. The data collection used questionnaires and field notes as well as through semi-structured interviews. The developed public speaking learning materials are considered as English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials. In its development, the Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach by Nunan (2004) was applied as the basis. The results of the needs analysis show that the dentistry students want to learn English in order to master public speaking so that they can communicate in formal forums such as plenary discussion. Therefore, they want the learning materials that can help them speak English more fluently and accurately. The learning materials consisting of six units developed in this study include tasks equipped with inputs in the form of texts and videos designed to facilitate the students in learning public speaking. The results of the expert judgment on the developed materials show scores ranging from 3.50 to 3.75, which are in a very good category. The results of the materials try-out show scores ranging from 3.36 to 3.52 which are in a very good category. The field notes data taken from two cycles during the materials implementation show that there is a slight improvement in learning aspects of motivation, engagement, and group work. There is an improvement in students’ mean score from 7.94 in the pre-test to 8.11 in the post-test. Hence, it can be concluded that the developed materials are already valid and effective in supporting students to learn public speaking.
