Abstract

This descriptive case study aims to portray the ways grade I students of International Islamic Primary School X have developed their English literacy through the use of a Reading Log. Therefore, three questions were posed to serve the research purpose: (1) the implementation of the Reading Log in the school, (2) the students’ activities in completing their Reading Log that could enhance their English literacy, and (3) the students’ English literacy based on Wells’s four- level of taxonomy after they use the Reading Log. To reach the objectives, 20 participants were recruited, including the headmaster, two homeroom teachers of 1 Ali class, two specialist Cambridge teachers, 10 students of 1 Ali class, four parents, and a librarian. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and documents. The results of data analysis revealed that: (1) the Reading Log was a name of an extensive reading program that exposed the students to a wide array of English books in terms of genres and topics. Morever, it required voluntary participation rather than mandatory one, (2) instead of book borrowing, the students’ activities in the Reading Log program were filling in the worksheet and having a comprehension talk with their homeroom teacher, and (3) after taking part in the Reading Log program those students who read more than their peers could be engaged in performative, functional and informational modes of literacy yet they had not reached the epistemic one. While those students who read less books were involved in a performative mode of literacy.
