Abstract

Building students’ character is useful to prepare them to lead a prosperous life. Moreover, the national education of Indonesia, which is based on Pancasila and 1945 Constitution is also rooted in some character values. Therefore, the practice of character education is important to be inculcated at school to build the students’ character which is in accordance with the purpose of national education. Thus, this study aims to investigate the practice of the implementation of character education in EFL classrooms in three senior high schools, more specifically, the techniques, methods, or modes used by the English teachers to practice character education in the classrooms and the obstacles that they faced in the process to practice it. In addition, this study also proposes some solutions to overcome the problems to promote character education in teaching English as a foreign language. This study applied the qualitative research design. The participants were three English teachers from three different schools and their English classes. These schools were chosen based on the data taken from the preliminary study which was conducted to identify the schools which implement character education in the teaching-learning process, especially in the English lesson. The data in this study were taken from the document analysis, classroom observation, and interviews. The data were analyzed by applying the interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The trustworthiness of the data was obtained through triangulation. The findings show that the three teachers used explicit and implicit modes. One of them also mixed the implicit mode with a modelling technique. Despite their efforts to inculcate character education in their teaching, they also faced some obstacles in the practice of inculcating the character values recommended by the Ministry of Education. The problems emerged from three major aspects: the students, the fellow teachers, and the school regulations. This study proposed four solutions to overcome the problems: more attention should be given to the students, the exact goal of the practice of character education in school should be known, the different opinions among teachers should be resolved without or with minimal conflicts, and school regulations which reflect the proposed character values should be imposed.
