Abstract

This case study aims to reveal (1) the ways Cambridge International Boarding School Yogyakarta (CIBSY) develops, fosters, and builds its student- centered approach (SCA) in English language teaching; (2) how the school applies the SCA to their teaching and learning processes in the English classroom; (3) the students’ and teachers’ experience in supporting the school’s teaching model; and (4) the advantages and challenges of this approach to English language learning. In this case study the data were collected from English language teachers, the principal, alumni, and the students of grade 10 and 11 of CIBSY, through observation, online and offline interviews, and documents. The data were analysed qualitatively through transcribing, condensing into codes and themes based on research questions, displaying through the matrices, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study reveal that CIBSY develops, fosters, and builds its SCA in English language teaching through real extracurricular activities. It conducts motivational and professional development programs for teachers to improve the quality of teaching, and training programs for students to improve their language proficiency. It supports the learning process by providing smartboard, Chromebook, LSD projector, internet connection, art education’s materials, Cambridge and Oxford University Press books, and National Geographic books with a subscription to IXL. It implements the SCA in the English classroom, by integrating project-based, problem-based, instruction- based, authentic, integrated, and collaborative learnings. It also applies debate, flipped classroom, discussion, game, exploring the matters, exercises, trial and error, project bazaar, and learning-by-doing activities. To support the school’s teaching model, teachers are involved in the teaching process as the facilitator, developer of thinking skills, source of knowledge, controller, organizer, assessor, promoter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. The students are involved in the learning process as round-table members, power-point presenters, lesson managers, and problem solvers. The SCA in English language learning brings many advantages to students, teachers, as well as schools. The school got many achievements in international or national Olympiads and competitions through the effective implementation of SCA.
