Abstract

This study aims to reveal: (1) the character values in Pathway to English textbook for grade XI students of SMA/MA, (2) how character values are integrated in the textbook, and (3) the quality of the textbook based on BSNP. This study is a content analysis using the descriptive-qualitative approach. The source of the data is the English textbook entitled Pathway to English for grade XI students of SMA/MA, which consists of nine chapters. The data were collected through reading and taking notes of the book. Data quantification was used to describe the occurrence of character values during the textbook evaluation, which was followed by assessment based on BSNP. The analysis procedures consisted of unitizing, sampling, recoding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The credibility and dependability of this study was gained from consensus and triangulation. The findings are as follows. (1) There are 16 out of 18 character values recommended by the Ministry of Education found in the textbook, which implies that the analyzed textbook positively supports the implementation of character education into the learning materials. (2) There are two strategies used in integrating character values into the materials in the textbook: implicit and explicit strategies, with the former being more frequently used than the latter. This finding supports some scholars’ claim that the integration of character education is more effective through the use of implicit strategy. (3) In accordance with the textbook evaluation based on BSNP, the textbook is categorized as a good textbook, achieving the total score of 82, and is one of textbooks recommended to teachers and students to use.
