Abstract

This research aims to describe the realization of English pronouns in Bahasa Indonesia. Their differences and the similarities are the concern of this research. The contextual aspect is a part of this research also. This topic is important because it depends on researcher experience. The experience is related to pronouns and how the communicants use them. Many errors are found when pronouns are used by language learners. The errors are in the distribution, shape, and construction of the pronouns. There is interference of learner mother tongue’s pronoun rules. This makes it interesting for the researcher to reveal its realization, differences, and the similarities. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The method used is the comparative method and it uses the translation method as the technique. The data sources are the novels In Stitches with Ms Wiz by Terence Blacker (1989) and Power-Crazy Ms Wiz by Terence Blacker (1992). Those novels are translated into Tertawa Bersama Ms Wiz by Mala Suhendra (2002) and Ms Wiz Gila Kuasa by Novia Stephani (2003) and published by Gramedia. The data are the sentences containing pronouns. The data are analysed by grouping the pronoun in data card and comprehending the realization. Then, they are contrasted to see the similarities and differences. The result of this research show that there are similarities and differences of English and Bahasa Indonesia pronouns. The similarities of construction are found in the personal, relative, demonstrative, reciprocal, reflexive, and possessive pronoun. In distributional aspect, the similarity occurs on personal, reciprocal, reflexive, and possessive pronoun. The differences of distribution aspect are found in the personal and demonstrative pronouns. English personal pronouns change their forms when they are in subject or object positions. In the construction aspect, English adjective pronouns have differences. The realization is fused with the main noun in Bahasa Indonesia. Honorific and contextual aspect is also one component that makes English pronoun realized differently in Bahasa Indonesia.
