Abstract

This research aims to develop feasible pop-up book materials for eight grade hearing-impaired students to improve their writing skill. It is deemed important as the absence of such materials for students with special needs. It is a Research and Development study following the ADDIE model proposed by Branch as the procedure of the development. The model has five steps namely: (1) analyze, (2) design, (3) develop, (4) implement, (5) evaluate. This research was conducted at SLB Tarbiyatul Muta’alimin, SLB Karya Winaya Pamanukan, and SLB Subang. The subject of this research involved 12 hearing impaired students and three teachers from three different schools. The data were gathered through an interview, questionnaires, and observation. The instruments of the research were an interview guideline, questionnaires, and an observation sheet. The data from the questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively by calculating the mean score of the questionnaire responses while those of interview and observation were analyzed qualitatively through data condensation, data display, and data conclusion. This research managed to develop six units of English writing materials for hearing-impaired students. The result of needs analysis showed these students had different difficulties in learning and teaching writing. In terms of writing, they had a limited range of vocabulary mastery, lacked the ability of constructing sentences correctly, and generating their ideas. Additionally, the teachers found difficulties in finding the appropriate materials that meet the students’ needs. The result of the evaluation materials showed that the developed materials could appropriately meet students’ needs. The mean result of the questionnaire from the expert showed 3.7 which can be said that the materials were categorized as very good referring to the interval conversion of 3.25 < x ≤ 4. Also, the result of the total mean score from the students was 3.2 meaning that the materials were categorized as good materials referring to the interval conversion of 2.5 ≤ x ≤ 3.34.
