Abstract

This study was mainly intended to reveal: (i) the best predictor of freshmen’s in-class L2 WTC; (ii) the relationship between freshmen’s L2 Speaking Anxiety and their L2 Learning Motivation; and (iii) the differences in freshmen’s L2 WTC by demographic variables. To obtain the objectives, correlational study was applied and the data were collected using questionnaires from 155 freshmen of English Education Department in Palangka Raya. To analyze the data, Multiple Regression, Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation, Mann-Whitney, and One-way ANOVA analysis were employed on SPSS version 25. The result revealed that: (i) L2 Speaking Anxiety was the stronger predictor of the freshmen’s L2 WTC than L2 Learning Motivation; (ii) there was a moderate and negative relationship between freshmen’s L2 Speaking Anxiety and their L2 Learning Motivation; (iii) there were no significant differences in freshmen’s L2 WTC by their gender and specialization stream in SHS.
