Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out significant differences in speaking achievement between students who were taught through Traditional Educational Games, Modern Educational Games, and those who were not. This research is quasi-experimental research. The subjects consisted of two groups of students as the experimental groups and one group as the control group. The population was grade eight students of SMP N 1 Minggir, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The sample was three classes that were selected by applying the cluster random sampling technique. The sample obtained was the students of Classes VIII A,VIII B, and VIII C. Class VIII A was taught using the Traditional Games, Class VIII B was taught using Modern Games, and Class VIIIC was taught using the Conventional Learning Method. The data were obtained by means of speaking skill (recount text). The data analysis used descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. The hypothesis was tested using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at the significance level of 0.05. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the speaking ability among grade eight students of SMP N 1 Minggir, Sleman, Yogyakarta taught by using the Traditional Games, from those taught using the Modern Games and Conventional Learning Methods. The result of the ANCOVA in the posttest score of the experimental groups and the control group showed that the significance value was 0.001, which is less than the significance level of 0.05 (F = 26.22, p < 0.05). This means that there was significant difference in the speaking ability among the three groups.
