Abstract
This research aims to: (1) discover the forms of idioms used in the subtitle of A Christmas Carol movie; (2) reveal the techniques used to translate the idioms from English into Indonesian subtitle; and (3) explicate the translation of idioms in the source language (SL) equivalent to the target language (TL). The subject of this research is the subtitle of A Christmas Carol movie, while the object in this research is words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs found in the subtitle. To lead this research, the researcher used a qualitative method. The researcher, as the human instrument, employed note-taking and observation methods to collect the data and equivalence method to analyze the data. The researcher discovered 8 forms of idioms based on the theory from Joodi (2012). Afterward, to acquaint the techniques used to translate the idioms from English into Indonesian subtitle, the researcher used the theory proposed by Nida and Taber (1974), were classified into 3 techniques. Furthermore, Nida’s (1960) theory used as the basis to explicate the translation of idioms in the source language (SL) equivalent to the target language (TL). It can be concluded that: 70 data idioms were found in the subtitle A Christmas Carol movie, which covers 4 data of noun phrases, 14 data of transitive verb phrases, 43 data of verbal phrases, 5 data of alliterative comparisons, 2 data of prepositional phrases, and 2 data of sentences. Furthermore, the most frequently used technique to translate the idioms from English into Indonesia subtitles that are, idiom to non-idiom 69 data and idiom to idiom 1 data. The translation of idioms in the source language (SL) equivalence to the target language (TL) was dominated by dynamic equivalence rather than formal equivalence.
