Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of project-based learning to integrate reading and writing skills, and to examine the difference in students reading and writing achievement among students taught by using project-based learning and those taught by using genre-based approach to the eleventh grade students of senior high school. This quasi-experimental research used pretest-posttest design involving students of eleventh grade at state senior high schools in Mataram in the academic year 2018/2019 who were selected using stratified random sampling in three schools. Then, a cluster random sampling technique was conducted to assign the experimental and control groups for each school. The independent variable of this study was project-based learning, while the dependents were reading and writing skills. To collect the data, pretest-posttest was assigned. The test for both reading and writing skills were validated through expert judgement and content validity. Moreover, the reliability of the instruments was measured using inter-rater reliability. The data were analyzed using parametric statistical technique of MANOVA test using SPSS 22.0 computer program. The findings of this study reveal that project-based learning had a significant effect to integrate reading and writing skills. It was indicated by the value of 0.00 for both reading and writing skills which was lower than 0.05. Moreover, there was also a significant difference in the students’ reading and writing achievements among those taught by using project-based learning and those taught by using genre-based approach to the eleventh-grade students of senior high school. Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted.
