Abstract

This research was intended to develop appropriate speaking materials for nursing students. It was necessary done, since the materials were used in nursing schools were more general than specific. This research and development (R&D) study adapted the development procedure proposed by Branch (2009) and Graves (2000). The procedure of materials development passed 5 steps; conducting need analysis, designing the course grid, developing the first draft of the product, implementing the final draft of the product, and evaluation. The respondents involved in this research included 1 English materials expert, 1 English teacher, 2 experienced nurses who have worked with foreigners, and 100 nursing students of STIKES Guna Bangsa who were in the second semester. The try-out was conducted twice. The first tryout (small group try-out) involved 10 students while the second try-out (large group try-out) involved 28 students. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The instruments of data collections encompassed interview guides for teacher, expert validation sheets, questionnaires for students and nurses. The interview was for collecting qualitative data and the results of questionnaire were for quantitative data which were analyzed by using percentages and descriptive statistics. The research findings reveal that: (1) based on the expert validation, the quality of the product in terms of contents, language, presentation and graphics design aspect was categorized very good with the conversation interval 3.25<x<4. Furthermore, the teacher’s responses toward the product also indicated the product was categorized very good since the mean score was within 3.25<x<4. (2) The result of students’ responses after conducting the first try-out and the second try-out indicated the product was categorized as very good since the mean score was within the data interval 3.25<x<4. Therefore, the developed materials for the second semester of nursing student were appropriate to be used in teaching and learning process of speaking.
