Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal the effectiveness of the Know-Want- Learned Strategy on: (1) the reading comprehension of narrative texts of grade 8 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudahtul Ulum, (2) the reading comprehension of narrative texts of low-motivated grade 8 students of the school. The focus of this study is reading comprehension by applying the Know-Want-Learned Strategy. The reading texts used in this study were narrative texts, and this study was also related to the accommodation of low-motivated grade 8 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudhatul Ulum. The method used in this study was quasi-experimental method. It involved the Know-Want-Learned Strategy as the independent variable, reading motivation as the moderator variable, and grade 8 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudhatul Ulum as the dependent variable. The sample is 38 grade 8 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudhatul Ulum established using cluster random sampling technique, divided into two groups: the experimental group consisting of 20 students and the control group consisting of 18 students. Reading comprehension tests (Pre-test & Post-tests) and reading motivation questionnaire (RMQ) were used to collect the data. This study used descriptive statistics and independent-samples t test as the requirements in data analysis. The results of this study show that there is a significant difference between the students taught by using the Know-Want-Learned Strategy and those students taught by using the conventional strategy. The result of the independent-samples t test that shows Sig. score 0.36, which was under 0.05 meaning that Hypothesis (Ha) is positively accepted (Hypothesis 1). Furthermore, 6 of 8 or 75% of low-motivated students in the experiment group had successfully increased their scores in reading comprehension, as could be seen by comparing their pre-test and post-test scores. There was only 1 of 5 or 20% of low-motivated students in the control group who has improved his reading comprehension score. This indicates that the low-motivated students in the experimental group taught by using the Know-Want-Learned Strategy has a bigger chance of improving their reading scores on reading narrative texts (Hypothesis 2)
