Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the learners needs in writing and develop an appropriate supplementary learning material to write based on learners learning styles. The nature of this study is Research and Development (Product Development). The procedures were conducting learners’ need analysis, designing the learning materials, developing the learning materials objective and materials content based on K-13 course curriculum, implementing the learning material in learning process, evaluating the learners writing achievement as outcomes, and revising of the final product. This study involved 34 learners of X Grade Science programme at a State Senior High School in Nganjuk as the research subjects. The data were collected through observation of the teaching and learning process in the class, VAK test for learners, learner’s and the English teacher interviews. The data analyses were in the forms of field notes, questionnaire result, interview transcripts, and learners’ writing scores. The findings of this study were described as follows. (1) The learners learning styles were divided into 35% of the learners were visual, 33% of the learners were auditory, and 32% of the learners were kinesthetic in their learning style. (2) The learning materials were appropriate and able to meet the learners’ needs and their learning styles. It was proved by the mean (χ) value 3.41 of overall items which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation. (3) The learning materials could help learners to write a recount and narrative text. (4) The learners could write the text by using their different perceptions and using mind mapping to connect what they read with what they would write. This study also suggested that English teachers should develop their own English learning materials which were appropriate to the needs and learning style of the learners.
