Abstract

The objective of this study is to disclose the needs of English Club’s Members of Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah) and develop speaking book materials, based on Communicative language teaching (CLT) theory. The research design was research and development, adapting the research procedure by Gustafson & Branch (2002) and Gall & Borg (2003) which covered: analysing learner’s and learning needs, designing course grid, developing the materials, preliminary field testing (expert judgement), main field testing, final revision. The subject was 16 English Clubs’ Student of Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah) and the English Club’s Instructor. The data were gathered through questionnaire, interview and observation. The result of those data was analysed by descriptive quantitative and descriptive qualitative method. The product of this study was speaking book materials consist of six units of materials :1) Reading the poem, 2) Playing Drama, 3) Telling story, 4) Reporting news, 5) Delivering speech, 6) Having a Debate. Those skills are chosen based on the suggestion of English club’s instructor. Each of them composed by three parts; introduction that covers unit title and learning objectives, main lesson that covers pre-task, task cycle and language focus, and enforcement that deals with mini dictionary and formative assessment. Concerning to the appropriateness of materials development, the product was evaluated by the expert judgement. As the result, the product is categorized by an appropriate material for the English Club of Assalafiyah Islamic senior high school. It was rated “very good” by the expert, instructor and student with the following mean score: the content appropriateness (3.47), the presentation and sequences appropriateness (3.47), language appropriateness (3.28), graphic and lay-out appropriateness (3.56).
