Abstract

The aims of this study were to: 1) investigating peer interactions used in some contexts in the studied Free Conversation classes, 2) investigating teachers’ views to peer interaction, 3) investigating students’ views to peer interaction, and 4) investigating Free Conversation class activities and its impacts to students’ peer interaction. A qualitative study was used as a method of this study. The participants of this study were students from four different classes from different departments at Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University. This study was conducted in Free Conversation classes which were held by Language Training Centre of Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University. Observations and interviews were used to collect the data. The data were then analyzed qualitatively to provide a rich detailed description of the case. To enhance the trustworthiness of this study, triangulation was employed to clarity meaning and verifying the repeatability of all observation or interpretation. The results generally showed that peer interaction were used as a context for experimenting with language, a context for correcting the language, and a context for in polishing the language. The use of peer interaction as a context for experimenting with language showed dominant proportion in the research. Teachers have positive views to peer interaction because it helps their students in the Free Conversation class. The students also have positive views to peer interaction as it promote students’ friendship and sharing of knowledge among them. The learning process of Free Conversation also showed that teachers provide learning activities to promote peer interaction.
