This study aims to develop a supplementary reading material for eight grade students of Junior High School. Two main principles were applied to develop the material. Reading for pleasure principles were applied to raise students’ reading habit and critical pedagogy principles to trigger students’ critical thinking. This Research and Development (R&D) study combined ADDIE model taken from Gustafson and Branch (2002) and Borg and Gall model from Gall et al (2007). The procedures of development were analyzing the learners’ needs, designing the course grid, developing blueprint of material, conducting preliminary field testing, conducting preliminary revision, conducting main field testing, and conducting final product revision. The subject of this research was all 8th grader students of SMP Bina Bangsa Baruga, Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi and 30 of them were involved in this research. The instruments of data collection were questionnaire for students’ needs analysis, questionnaire for expert’s judgment, and questionnaire for students’ opinion toward the material, interview guideline was prepared for English teacher, observation guideline was prepared to monitor the main field-testing phase. The data of the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis technique for interview and observation. The results show that Various Reading for Enjoyment’s first draft score given by expert was 4,188 out of maximum score of 5. The score was categorized as good category. Furthermore, the result of main field testing was satisfying. VREN’s holistic score for reading for pleasure and critical thinking both were 2,8 out of 4. That made the average score from students’ satisfactory questionnaire was 2,78 and belonged to good category.
