Abstract

This research aims to find out how to develop appropriate speaking materials based on problem solving activities for eleventh grade students of senior high school. This is a research and development kind of research which adapted Branch’s (2009) model of development. The stages are analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. The subjects were 119 eleventh grade students of Ngaglik II senior high school. The data were obtained through questionnaire, interview, and observation which then analyzed using descriptive statistics and descriptive qualitative method. The research findings which are related to needs analysis suggest that the students’ goal in learning speaking is to improve their vocabulary mastery and speaking fluency since the students lack in vocabulary mastery, pronunciation, and fluency. They favored discussion, asking and giving opinion, exchanging information, and problem solving to be the activities in the learning process. They want to be active participants in the learning process as the teacher becomes their motivator. Further, regarding to its appropriateness, the product was evaluated in terms of its content, language, presentation, graphic, and layout. The findings show that the product is appropriate to be used in learning process as it was rated by the expert in the category of “good” and rated by the students in the category of “very good.”
