Abstract

This research aimed at developing content-based English materials for grade X business and management study program at vocational high school and finding out the appropriateness of the developed materials. This was a research and development (R&D) study. This research used the model proposed by Jolly and Bolitho (1998). The development of the learning materials was carried out through six steps, namely identification of needs for materials, exploration of need, contextual realization of materials, pedagogical realization of materials, production materials and students use, and evaluation of materials. The data were collected through survey and interview. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires and an interview protocol. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and descriptive qualitative. The content- based instruction was used as the approach in developing each unit through the contents and the type of activities. Six units of the materials were designed by considering the students’ needs. The results of the needs analysis showed that, in target needs, the students wanted to be able to communicate in English well to support their job in the future. Regarding the learning needs, the students expected to have dialogues/monologues and texts along with pictures, monologues/short dialogues, and the explanation of the sentence structures based on the text learned. The appropriateness of the learning materials was viewed in terms of content, language, presentation, layout, and audio. The developed materials were categorized into “very appropriate” based on the experts’ judgment evaluation. It achieved a final mean score of 4.56. Meanwhile, the results of materials evaluation based on the students and teacher’s evaluation were categorized into “appropriate”. It achieved final mean scores of 4.10 and 3.65, respectively.
