Abstract

Motivation is an essential component in language learning. Prior studies often associate higher motivated students with higher achievement. The term ‘motivational strategy’ is proposed by Dörnyei to describe the efforts made to keep students enthusiastic and motivated to learn. Teacher, as a figure with direct contact with students during the learning process, are found to use motivational strategies in class. This study aimed at examining the use of motivational strategies by junior high school English teachers as perceived by students. This descriptive survey study was conducted on 195 highly-motivated students from 7 public and private schools with A-accreditation in Yogyakarta. The quantitative data were collected through valid and reliable questionnaires. The qualitative data obtained from interviews and observations were used as supporting data. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and were processed statistically with SPSS software. The study found teachers to apply motivational strategies frequently in the classroom with CBMC (74.7728) as the set of strategies used the most, followed by EPSE (72.3000), MPM (68.9457), and GIM (66.4414). This result was supported by the qualitative data, from the interview and observation, which showed the frequent use of CBMC. There was a significant difference on the use of motivational strategies due to teacher gender (p = 0.003), school type (p = 0.003), and professional development experience (p = 0.000).
