Abstract

This study aimed to develop English for Specific Purpose (ESP) materials for accounting students, based on intercultural language learning theory. The research design was Research and Development. The researcher adapted the research procedure proposed by Gall, Gall and Borg (1983:775-778) and Masuhara as cited in Tomlinson (1998:247). The procedure of the development included needs analysis, syllabus writing, developing preliminary materials, preliminary field testing (expert judgment and tryout), and final draft revision. The subjects were 83 first-year students at Accounting Department, University of Bengkulu (35 males, 48 females). The data were gathered through surveys, semi- structured interview and document analysis. The surveys and document analysis were analyzed quantitatively, while the interview transcript was examined qualitatively. The product of this study was a set of ESP materials for accounting students based on intercultural language learning theory. These materials were developed in line with the results of the needs analysis, in which the subjects of the research were adult learners whose English proficiency level was between A1 and A2 level of CEFR (beginner and pre-intermediate). The results show that in reading the students expected to be able to use skimming and scanning technique correctly, to find the main ideas of paragraphs, to answer stated and unstated details questions, and to infer unknown vocabulary. The students needed to be exposed to texts related to accounting in various cultures in order to help them in their work environment. The results of expert judgment and tryout revealed that the developed intercultural reading materials were considered “very good” because they met the five criteria of appropriate materials with the following mean scores: Curriculum Fit (3.7; 3.8), Content and Tasks (3.56; 3.81), Instructional Design (3.75; 3.82), Technical Design (3.75; 3.86), and Learning resources (3.67; 3.80). The intercultural reading materials were also appropriate as each unit contained: unit number and unit title, learning objectives, idiom, proverbs, follow-up, let’s reflect, summary, and mini dictionary. Finally, the developed intercultural reading materials for accounting students also had high quality since they met the four parameters of the overall evaluation, namely suitability, generalizability, adaptability, and flexibility.
