Abstract
The aims of this research were to analyze what categories of proper nouns were used in the translation of seven series Narnia novels, to analyze what techniques of translating proper nouns were used by the translator in the seven series of Narnia novels translation, and to explain what tendency of ideology in translating proper nouns was adopted by the translator in translating the seven series of Narnia novels. This research was a descriptive qualitative. The sources of the data were seven series of Narnia novel and the novel translation. The data of this research were words and phrases in the novel containing proper nouns. The data collection techniques used in this research was an observation method (Metode Simak) and writing technique (Teknik Catat). The instruments of this research were first a human instrument that was the researcher. Second, the characteristics of proper noun became an indicator to help the researcher determine the proper data for the research. The data analysis of this research used three processes i.e. data condensation, description, and conclusion drawing. The results of this research were as follows. First, there were 561 data of proper noun that found in seven original the Chronicle of Narnia novels and its translations. The proper nouns were categorized into seven categories namely names of humans and other sentient beings 302 data (53.8%), geographical names 101 data (18%), other names 74 data (13.2%), names of animals 49 data (8.7%), titles of paintings, books, periodicals, newspapers, etc 18 data (3.2%), names of temporal units and festivals 13 data (2.3%), and names of nationalities 4 data (0.7%). The techniques of translating proper nouns were divided into eight, namely translation 270 data (48.1%), transference 189 data (33.7%), modification 38 data (6.8%), addition 34 data (6.1%), generalization 9 data (1.6%), substitution 8 data (1.4%), omission 7 data (1.2%), and transference plus phonetic adaptation 6 data (1.1%). The tendency of dominant ideology in proper noun translation was foreignization (81.8%).
