Abstract

The students’ reading speed and comprehension ability are crucial for students. However, the preliminary study the researcher did showed that most of XI IPA 3 students of SMAN 1 Pleret in the academic year 2017/2018 had low reading speed and comprehension ability. This research, therefore, was aimed at improving the students’ reading speed and comprehension ability by using Timed Repeated Reading technique. This research belongs to a Classroom Action Research (CAR) study adopting the procedure of Elliot (1991). In its implementation, Timed Repeated Reading technique was implemented in Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach proposed by Nunan (2004). The students’ reading speed progress was monitored by using three scoring methods adapted from Chung & Nation (2006).The actions of this research were carried out in two cycles consisting of four meetings each. Observation, field notes, and interviews were used to collect data which were then analyzed qualitatively. The students’ reading speed and comprehension scores in daily meetings of each cycle, the students’ pre-test score, and the students’ post- test score were analyzed quantitatively. This research results show that (1) Timed Repeated Reading technique improves the students’ reading speed. The reading speed scores, the scores from difference of daily reading in Cycle 2 and pre-test analyzed by using three scoring methods proposed by Chung & Nation, improve in the range of 32 words to 76 words. The use of this technique encouraged the students to read faster, reduced the students’ bad reading habits, and enhanced the students’ skimming and scanning skills. Moreover, (2) Timed Repeated Reading technique improves the students’ reading comprehension. the students’ mean score in pre-test and post- tests improved from 65.78 to 72.30 in Cycle 1 and 77.39 in Cycle 2. By implementing this technique, the students were encouraged becoming independent in comprehending reading texts and improved their vocabulary mastery. Besides, (3) Timed Repeated Reading technique improves the students’ engagement in the teaching and learning process of reading. The implementation of this technique improved the students’ concentration during their reading process, created conducive reading teaching and learning process, and caused excited feeling in reading texts. Thus, the students showed their motivation in joining all of the learning activities where they showed their readiness in joining the class from the beginning to the end, activeness and eagerness in doing the provided tasks, and attentive listening to the researcher’s explanation and instruction.
